Tourism seniors undertake Abacus Functionalities For Tourism Students (AFTS) Training

            Abacus is the largest Global Distribution System (GDS) in Asia-Pacific. It is a Singapore-based company which was founded in 1988. It provides international and domestic bookings, pricing, ticketing facility, hotel and car bookings, travel insurance and travel information. It allows domestic booking, pricing and ticketing on Philippine Airlines (PR) domestic and international bookings including PAL Express (2P) and other domestic carriers in the company (Abacus Functionalities for Tourism Students Manual, 2014). As an important GDS in the aviation business, manpower are needed to be working on its system, thus a continuous training among travel agents and also students who might potentially join the workforce undergo such airline reservations training.

            As part of the On-the-Job Training of SMU senior tourism students, they are given the chance to have hands-on training in the manipulation and processing of bookings through Abacus which is used by many travel agencies. The group of 17 tourism students together with their OJT Adviser and HTM Department Head, Mrs. Mayvelyn S. Covita underwent a 4-day course program, from March 10-13, 2015, named Abacus Functionalities for Tourism Students (AFTS). This module is almost similar to the module used for travel agents’ staffs that undergo Basic Reservations Training. The training venue is at Makati City

            Ms. Chico L. Villalon is the trainer for the whole course program where she taught the basic and advance parts of using the Abacus System.

The course outline is presented below:

Day 1:            

·         History of Abacus and Its Products

·         Equipment Familiarization

·         Introduction to Basic Passenger Name Record (PNR) workflow

ü  Sign in and Sign out

·         Encode and Decode Functions (city name, airline and aircraft)

ü  Review of Some Terminology

·         Introduction to the Mandatory Fields; PRINT (Phone, Received from, Itinerary, Name, Ticket Option Fields)

ü  What is Air Availability

ü  How to Create a Sample Itinerary Field

ü  How to Modify the Itinerary


 

Day 2:

·         Continuation on the Itinerary Topic

ü  Modification and Exercises

·         Mandatory Field: PRINT

ü  How to Create a Name Field

ü  Name Field Modification

·         Mandatory Field: PRINT

ü  Importance of Ticket Option

ü  How to Add the Agency Phone Field

ü  Role of Receive From Field in the PNR

·         Properly Saving the PNR

ü  End Transaction

ü  System Errors

·         How to Retrieve the PNR

Day 3:

·         Introduction to the Optional Fields Including Modification

Day 4:

·         15-minutes Review

·         Pricing and Issuance of an Air Ticket

·         More Hands-on Practice

·         Final Examination

 

This training provided the participants a wholistic understanding of the Travel Agency Management course, in particular, on the use of an airline reservation system. With the wide array of exercises and examples, trainees were conditioned and motivated to execute bookings and reservations very well.
