Fifteen (15) students of PreSchEd 13 (Guidance and Counseling in the Preschool Education) and their instructor, Dr. Roscoe N. Gacusana, RGC visited the Nueva Vizcaya Brightchild School for the conduct of the nursery, kindergarten and preparatory class last May 4, 2009.

The class observed how the nursery and preparatory teachers and teacher-assistant handled the children in the class. They also tangibly witnessed how the children in the pre-school behave and interact with their classmates and their teachers. The teachers disclosed that the common misbehaviors or problems of the children were their anxieties of being left by their parents and seeking attention. The ages of the children range from 3 – 6 years old. The class observed that Kim (one of the nursery pupils) has been seeking attention by overacting during the class activities. The children learned the alphabet and the correct sound through the aid of the music and recorded voice. The teacher on the other hand allowed the children read and sing the alphabet with her. Afterwhich, she let them do it for themselves and give examples of their own. The observers saw that the strategy was effective because they can grasp with the lesson effectively. After the lesson in the English Alphabet, the children danced with the latest modern music of Marianne Rivera , “Sabay Tayo” and the folk dance. The children enjoyed the music and the dance movements as seen with their facial and bodily expressions. They were also taught of the basic foundation of faith by praying before they partake of their snacks. Some basic health habits like using the soap and washing their hands were learned by the children. After the health break, they were taught of the combination of primary colors to form secondary colors through the food coloring substances mixed with water in the plastic bottles. The children were asked to identify the different primary and secondary colors formed through the mixture. They were very receptive of the concept inculcated by the teachers.

The PreSchEd 13 class noticed that the classroom was convenient decorated and was full of educational materials on the walls with cabinets and other educational equipment conducive for learning. It was captivating for children who are just beginning to attend formal schooling. The class also observed that the teachers were very patient, jolly, dynamic, friendly, animated with the children. They revealed that teaching children is very hard but very enjoyable because aside from being innocent they (teachers) always feel young and dynamic. The class learned that being a nursery teacher requires a lot of perseverance and understanding of the behavior of the children. They (teachers) must also be versatile. That means that they dance, sing, act and speak with the children because they are great imitators. “Children Learn What They Live”. The teachers who taught the children during the day were Ma. Christine A. Cordova, Nursery Teacher, Marie Dan S. Iglesias, Preparatory Teacher and Elisha B. Cadang, Teacher-assistant for Kinder.

The PreSchEd 13 class enjoyed being with the children and they were asked to document their observation through narrative and pictorial reports. Their impressions and insights on the activity were also incorporated in the report.

The officers of the PreSchEd 13 class for the summer term 2009 are: President-Mary Joy Buyacco, Vice President- Gigi Taguinod, Secretary - Myriell Cera, Treasurer - Mark Franco P.I.O. - Mary Joy Doliyok, Coordinators - Jenny Agaloos and Joy Bandao. CHILDREN LEARN WHAT THEY LIVE

If a child lives with criticism,
He learns to condemn.
If a child lives with hostility,
He learns to fight.
If a child lives with ridicule,
He learns to be shy.
If a child learns with tolerance,
He learns to be patient.
If a child lives with encouragement,
He learns confidence.
If a child lives with praise,
He learns to appreciate.
If a child lives with fairness,
He learns justice.
If a child lives with security,
He learns to have faith.
If a child lives with approval,
He learns to like himself.
If a child lives with acceptance and friendship,
He learns to find love in the world.
