Nueva Vizcaya Bright Child School Goes TLS

To reach out to more schools in the pre-school, elementary and secondary levels, the International Center for the Study of Teaching and Learning Styles (ICSTLS) of SMU conducted a Seminar-Workshop on Teaching and Learning Styles to the faculty members of the Nueva Vizcaya Bright Child School (NVBCS) last November 5-6, 2010.

The opening ceremonies started with an invocation by Mr. Ralph Lagrio and the National Anthem by Ms. Rica de Luna, both from NVBCS. Dr. Anita V. Boceta, In-charge of the ICSTLS gave a brief background information on how the center started at SMU. She also explained the mechanics of the seminar-workshop.

The first speaker was Dr. Glenda G. Salem, Head of Professional Education and ICSTLS lecturer. She comprehensively discussed the Rita/Kenneth Dunn Learning Styles Model and its Implication to a more Effective Teaching and Learning. She presented some strategies/techniques and styles of teaching. She described and demonstrated mindscaping and jigsaw classroom technique. As a follow up, Dr. Boceta discussed some small group activities and explained how to make a lesson plan outline based on Teaching and Learning Styles-Dunn and Dunn Model (TLSDDM).

Ms. Sharon Heidi Soronel, Supervising Instructor and ICSTLS Staff demonstrated a lesson for pre-school children using the TLSDDM style. Everyone enjoyed this learning experience.

The rest of the period was spent on a lecture/demonstration given by Dr. Boceta regarding the preparation of instructional materials using the manual and electronic processes.

The second day of the seminar was the workshop proper where the participants prepared lesson plans and instructional materials. These materials were exhibited and presented to everybody for feedbacking. This was followed by a closing program in the afternoon. Impressions about the seminar-workshop were expressed by the participants in the pre-school, elementary and secondary levels. Some of these were as follows:
  • The two-day seminar on TLSDDM was very helpful and fruitful.
  • The seminar-workshop opened a new path on understanding our pupils and on how to make our class more active and productive by using the different teaching materials. It also makes us, teachers, more enthusiastic and alive in our passion for teaching.
  • I was so impressed with what the speakers/facilitators, led by Dr. Boceta, taught us. The presentations were very motivating and appealing.
Certificates of Participation and Appreciation to the participants and the host school were awarded. Ms. Maria Theresa S. Basilio, the directress of NVBCS gave the closing message and she stated that the training was actually a dream come true on the school’s vision “to inspire greatness One child at a time” and its goal “ to be a HEDCEN or a holistic development center” by 2012. She expressed her thanks to the speakers/demonstrators, Dr. Anita V. Boceta, Dr. Glenda G. Salem and Ms. Sharon Heidi Soronel.
