SMU is Regional Best Implementer (Marciano Shares Experiences in the Drugwatch 2009)

By Dr.Roscoe N. Gacusana, RGC

Saint Mary’s University bagged the Best Implementer in Drug Abuse Education in Region 02. Mr. Sherwin A. Marciano, Faculty Member of the School of Education and NSTP Secretary, consolidated the supporting documents related to drug abuse prevention and control program from the different schools and offices in the university. He said that the preparation was tedious and intensive.

Dr. Roscoe N. Gacusana, RGC, Drugwatch 2009 TV Program Host had a productive sharing during the live telecast of the program over Mamuric Television Network Station (MTNS) Local TV 08, Poblacion North, Solano, Nueva Vizcaya. The advertising fee for the airing of the episode of the program was sponsored by the Saint Mary’s University administration.

Mr. Marciano shared that the SMU as a community has supported and implemented the five (5) components of the National Drug Education Program (NDEP) and was able to meet the criteria set by the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) through the Dangerous Drugs Board (DDB), Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA), Department of Health (DOH) among other agencies. He also presented a film-maker (infomercial) about drug abuse prevention featuring the Marian Student leaders and an interview with Hon.Ramos, a Marian alumnus and Barangay Captain of Don Mariano Marcos, Bayombong, Nueva Vizcaya. He felt elated inspite of the rigorous efforts of consolidating the reports and documents because almost all papers needed were readily available in the concerned offices/schools of the university. “This experience served as a challenge and enlightenment for me to become a more mature individual”, Marciano said. “I successfully survived against the odds and trials with the all-out support of the administration, department heads, heads of offices and faculty members concerned”, he added.

SMC (now SMU) has been intensively instituting the programs on drug education since the 1970s when it garnered the Best Implementer in Drug Abuse Prevention Education (DAPE). It incessantly supports the anti-drug campaign of the government and serves as advocate for drug abuse prevention among the youth (ISY & OSY). As a winner for the Regional Search for the Best Implementer of Drug Education, it automatically becomes an entry to the National Level which is on-going. Billboards containing slogans in drug abuse prevention are placed in conspicuous areas in the university. Mr. Marciano and Dr. Gacusana agreed to strengthen the support system and linkages in terms of the drug abuse prevention implementation in the university.

Meanwhile, November is declared as the National Month for Drug Abuse Prevention and International Month on Drug Trafficking. Hence, a panel discussion with the PDEA and Provincial (Local) government officials will be conducted this coming November 2009 at the Fr. Tonus Gymnasium. It will be televised over MTNS Local TV 08.

Dr. Gacusana and Mr. Marciano urged the youth and local government leaders, school officials, teachers, parents and law enforcers to unite for the common goal of eradicating the menace on drugs. Mr. Marciano shared about the case of his brother becoming dependent on drugs (specifically marijuana) thus is very much dedicated in advocating drug prevention among the young.

Finally, they urged everyone to be sincere advocates of the anti-drug campaign. In the next episode of the program, the details on the criteria for the search and the action plan in drug abuse prevention will be extensively discussed. Student-leaders will also be invited in a panel discussion so that it will be more interactive and more informative to the TV viewers.
