GOTC Conducts Peer Counselors Training

By Roscoe N. Gacusana, Ed.D., RGC

The Guidance staff has been recruiting new members of the Marian Peer Counselors (MPC) by school/college or department. The peer counseling program accepts caring student counselors dedicated to help their fellow students become the person they are capable of becoming- fully functioning and mature individuals. This program aims to promote and enhance student learning by involving meaningful and continuous academic, career, personal and social development; promote the health, well-being and safety of young people through peer education and referral; train a selected group of students to help and listen to their fellow students, provide support and assist the school counselors in the implementation of the school's guidance program.

The membership is open to all students who will pass the pre-screening and the rigid training. Last school year 2008-2009, a total of 280 students across year levels joined the Marian Peer Counselors. The most number of peer counselors came from the School of Education (56 or 20%) and Business (53 or 18.9%) and the least number came from the School of Engineering and Architecture (13 or 4.6%). Dr. Corazon N. Abriam, Dean of student Affairs, proposed that the student-leaders in the Student Central Council (SCC) and the Class Year Organization will automatically become Marian Peer Counselors. In this relation, series of trainings for the said group were conducted on July-August 2008 at the Sacred Heart Center.

For school year 2009-2010, the guidance staff is conducting a pre-screening process to identify peer counselor-candidates who will undergo the intensive training which is scheduled tentatively on Sept. 5-6, 2009 at the Sacred Heart Center. The students will be selected according to their sincerity, commitment, attitudes, values, and love for people. The peer counselors are epected to help in the implementation of the guidance program especially in line with peer counseling. The Marian Peer Counselors' Organization (MPCO) is under the supervision and management of Mr. Bon Homme G. Torres, Guidance Counselor.
