THE RED CARPET WALK OF 2010

To realize the power of the dream…

One hundred seventy-four days after the last Sunday of the Bar Examinations, the Supreme Court, through its Bar Exam Committee, released on 28 March 2010 the results of the 2009 Bar Examinations held at De La Salle University, Manila.

Out of the 5,903 examinees aiming to reach for their ultimate dream to become a lawyer, only 1,451 passed the country’s licensure examination for lawyers – which only accounts for 24.58% of the year’s total examinees.

Two of the 1,451 lucky passers – Atty. Brenda Lyn Soriano-Afalla and Atty. Arnel A. Lindongan – are SMU College of Law alumni, thereby entitling them to sign the 48th and 49th slots in the Marian Roll of Attorneys.

To celebrate victory…

With such Marian victory, the SMU College of Law, in its annual tradition of honoring new Marian lawyers, sponsored a motorcade and testimonial dinner for the two new Bar passers. Seemingly an umalohokan in its sense, the motorcade held in the morning aimed to make known to the people that Saint Mary’s University College of Law has once again produced two lawyers, a proof of the university’s excellence in legal education.

And who says a celebration is complete without a banquet? In the evening after the motorcade, a testimonial dinner was likewise sponsored. Breaking away from the conventional way of how the SMU College of Law celebrates testimonial dinner for new Marian lawyers, the Vincit Omnia Veritas (VOV), the official student organization of the College of Law, made a few remarkable modifications. Red carpet was traditionally used to mark the route taken by VIPs and celebrities at formal events, and the Red Carpet Walk was a significant addition to this year’s testimonial dinner. Rolling out the red carpet marks the recognition and honor given to the new Marian lawyers.

The new dean of the College of Law, Atty. Herson S. Valmores, opened the program with his welcome message. The newly appointed Vice President for Academic Affairs, Dr. Moises Alexander T. Asuncion also graced the evening. The VOV officers, equipped with technological advantage, prepared a PowerPoint Presentation as tribute to the new bar passers. The presentations featured the activities and accomplishments of Atty. Afalla and Atty. Lindongan when they were still in the College of Law. A powerful song of success entitled the “Power of the Dream” was sung live in the background while the slides were presented. An institutionalized token designed by no less than Dean Valmores was awarded to the new lawyers.

In response, Atty. Afalla and Atty. Lindongan shared their experiences on how they treaded the path leading to their victory, their hardships and triumphs, their adversities and their sweet victory.

To lead a new generation…

The testimonial dinner is a victory party with other significant events rolled into one. Following the tribute to the new Marian lawyers was the oath-taking ceremony of the new set of officers of the Vincit Omnia Veritas. Atty. Irma R. Preza, a Marian lawyer and adviser of the VOV, presented the new breed of leaders of the College of Law, who were inducted by Atty. Leslie D. Costales, also a Marian lawyer and adviser of the VOV.

The following is the new set of VOV officers:

To honor a great man…

As the College of Law ushers in a new dean, the College is also saddened by the retirement of a great man – the former dean Judge Jose B. Rosales. The VOV officers presented another PowerPoint documentation, highlighting the accomplishments of this great man who retired as RTC Judge in the government service and as dean in the academe.
